ADVICE | TEACHING | DIALOGUE

After many years of experience in the educative field, currently I teach at ArtEZ art academy (2nd and 4th year), and at Drawing Inventions Academy, a master’s trajectory for drawing artists. I teach experimental drawing, coach students on their work and process, and in writing artist statements.

Also, I have a coaching practice for individual artists, both amateur and professional.

As a member of the K.F. Hein Fund art committee I coach artists working on commissioned artworks. I am regularly part of a jury or selection committee, for example for commissioned works.

I enter in dialogue: through analyzing, through talking about art, and also, through making. Within my practice I interact in dialogue with the work itself, and also, through making, with the world around me and the other. I do this because I believe images evoke a different kind of conversation, than words do. I believe the act of drawing means practising yourself in being open, vulnerable, curious, and attentive, to what is around you, and within you.


Within each of these contexts, I aim to facilitate an open space where there is room for dialogue, movement, curiosity, and growth.

I listen carefully, and help to align work, passion and concept. Integrity and careful attention are qualities people characterize me with.

If you are an artist and want to talk about what your next step should be, if you are looking for a fresh look on your work, if you need help selecting work for your portfolio or writing an artist statement, I will gladly use the knowledge I gathered throughout the years – on the joys and difficulties of making art, the highs and lows of  being an artist, on showing your work to the outside world – to help you clarify and fortify your work, and grow as a maker.

Prior to the meeting, I will enquire about the questions you have or what you would like to work on. The work meeting itself lasts an hour and a half, and preferably takes place in your workspace or studio. The price for a one-off consultation is 100 euro (excluding VAT / travel expenses). A longer process (e.g. guidance via e-mail and an occasional work meeting) is also a possibility, in that case the price is 90 euro ex VAT per meeting. This can also be online, or a combination of online and live meetings.
Furthermore I have 2 online courses of 8 lessons available, which focus on exploring possibilities in drawing and finding your own voice in making.

CONSULTATION AND COACHING FOR ARTISTS

ADVISORSHIP

As part of the Art Committee of the K.F. Hein Fund, I have experience in advising on commissioned artworks. Some of these trajectories I guided from selection to final installment: mainly in terms of artistic content, at times also very practically: from drawing up a longlist, the selection process and implementation, to invitations for the final presentation, and press release.

I take pleasure in connecting artist and location, and I enjoy looking for an exciting synergy. Some of the trajectories I guided went smoothly, in others I learned better what may be needed to bring client, artist and situation together. As a supervisor of the annual Art Participation project (in which young artists are connected to an organization and develop a work for it) I have become very aware of the nuances and sensitivities that may play between artist and environment. My way of dealing with this: listening attentively, reacting tactically and searching for a connection.

I have often been part of a selection committee for the K.F. Hein Stipend, Travel Stipend, Garden Studio. I am skilled in writing and editing texts on art.

DIALOGUE

Art as a learning tool: The lectorate of art academy HKU has invited me in 2018 to do a short residency at business learning institute De Baak. As part of research on ways to employ art as a learning tool, I was asked to work on a drawing in plain sight of the students. During their lunch breaks I spoke with them about what I was doing. For some,  watching the process of art being made caused wonderful insights in their own learning process.

Art as a way to meet and connect: In may 2013 I was a resident at Lugar a Dudas artspace in Cali, Colombia. As a story collector I held office in the streets, asking people to tell me about their lives in return for a piece of home-made cake. Afterwards I converted the stories to drawings.

Art as a way to show empathy: in 2019 I was a resident for two months in a nursing home for people with acquired brain injury of AxionContinu. I got to assist during various activities, spoke with inhabitants and employees, and conducted drawing workshops with the inhabitants. When I came home home I wrote and drew to reflect on what had happened. As a closure of the residency I left an edition for the inhabitants: a portrait that represents various sides of living in the home, a face that expresses both peaceful acceptation, and sadness and mourning.

Art as a way to exchange: In 2020, during the corona pandemic, Viaa university in Zwolle invited me to exhibit works related to the sense of alienation of life taking place online – as was the case for their students. Simultaneously, the art committee of Viaa and I developed a plan to connect the students and exchange what impact the pandemic had on them, through drawing. We sent all 1500 students a postcard, that was empty on one side and on the other side had one of 5 simple drawing assignments that provoked imagination and invited to draw how the pandemic situation was experienced.

Art as a way to bring joy and movement: During the corona pandemic, AxionContinu developed an art work book for the residents of it’s nursing homes, who were forced to stay in their rooms and to not see any visitors due to corona measures. I contributed a page with an outline to make a drawing.
