In her drawings, Marisa Rappard investigates intuitively what it means to be human in our current, fluid world, in which technology intervenes lives, contact is ephemeral and overwhelming amounts of information flow past daily. Rappard is interested in how man places it’s hope in technology and confers it almost religious or transcendent characteristics, while at the same time this technology clearly has an alarming downside: the sense of alienation when only making contact with the other through a screen, false news making it increasingly difficult to distinguish what is true.

Reflecting on how people relate to the digital, Rappards working method is explicity analogous. The digital always goes by proxy of a technological medium, whilst there is little more direct than the act of drawing. Using hand-drawn lines on a fragile medium as paper, she makes tangible how technology influences the human sense of self.

The often vast size of her work physically makes palpable how it may seem impossible to get a grip on the multitude of facts we are confronted with on a daily basis. To this end Rappard has also constructed spatial drawings, in which she lets the abundancy of lines flow out of the paper and enter the room, or places the drawing on a construction, allowing the viewer to scroll through the drawing.

Marisa Rappard (1979) lives and works in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Her work has been on display at various venues in her home country, such as museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and Kunsthal Kade in Amersfoort, as well as abroad, most recently at Drawing Now art fair in Paris. Recently she had solo exhibitions at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, and the Drawing Centre Diepenheim. Her work is well represented in Centraal Museum’s national drawing collection, as well as the collections of NOG/Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Boijmans van Beuningen museum, UMC Utrecht and many private collections. The Mondrian Fund has supported her practice with a stipend since 2017.
