‘Waves of Whispers, Traces, Tidings’ by Marisa Rappard is a beguilding, fluid cascade of densely inscribed drawings and collages, interspersed with small wooden slats. Emanating almost seamlessly from a large wall-hung sheet of similarly worked paper, this overwhelming flood of visual information poos on the gallery floor, effectively invading the viewer’s space. Given dthe fine detail throughout, a committed examination of it siddzyingly various patritculars - areas of dense hatching, wildly looping lines, patches of shimmering colour - requires of the viewer a certain amount of physical movement and manoeuvring. This also involves an intermittent shuttling of visual attention between intimate scrutiny and a more panoptic appreciation of the work’s deceptively casual overall design. Rappard works intuitively, happily accomodating the accidents and unforseen associations that accrue during a given work’s elaboration. Poised between compositional integrity and potential desintegration, her works reflect a contemporary world of confused and confusing perspectives, dispersed subjectivity, ephemeral connections and endless, ungraspable data flow. - Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith in ‘Beyond Drawing’, 2023
